Galapagos penguins are the only penguins that inhabit the Equatorial line. These penguins are the smallest penguins in South America, and the second smallest ones in the world. Also, it is the only species that does not have a specific reproduction season.
This species is known as the biggest tortoise in the world, weighting up to 250kg and with a life expectancy of up to 100 years in freedom. It is the dominant herbivore of the archipelago, so it has an important ecological role.
The iguanas that inhabit the Galapagos Island are one of the species that have presented a greater evolution process. It is believed that they arrived as green iguanas. Today, there exist 4 different species, including the black iguana, the only marine species of the world.
One of the best swimmers of the Galapagos Islands, they can submerge up to 350 meters and stay under water up to 10 minutes. Thanks to their easy adaptation, today they can be easily seen in most of the islands.
With a marine extension of 138,000 km2, the marine sanctuary of Galapagos is the ideal area for shark habitat. In the Galapagos National Park, it is possible to find up to 58 different species of sharks, including the famous tiger shark, hammerhead shark, white shark, several species of rays, among others.
Characterized by the distinctive color of their legs, these sea birds are the main attraction of the Galapagos Islands due to their fabulous mating dances. Their legs are different shades of blue depending on the stage of their lives and the mating season.
The Galapagos Albatross are considered the biggest bird of the archipelago. They can be found mainly in the Spanish Island, where males arrive during the May season, waiting for the females to start the mating process.
It is more complicated to observe these boobies, being their main nesting place the San Cristobal Island in the Northern part and the Genovesa Island, although sometimes, they might be seen in different islands due to their habit of feeding in the open sea.
Despite being a migratory bird, the flamingo draws the attention of visitors due to its bright red or pink color. They feed mainly on shrimp in the saline pits of Isabela Island, although they can also be fund in Floreana and Santiago Islands.
